The newest Klingon words
The basic lexicon of Klingon is set out in the books The Klingon Dictionary
and Klingon for the Galactic Traveler, both by the language's creator, Marc
Okrand. A few more words authored by Okrand can be found in the audio books
Conversational Klingon and Power Klingon, and various other sources such as
a series of trading cards put out by Skybox in the 1990s, even a Hallmark
Card Christmas ornament commercial. The largest source of canon (i.e. made up
by Okrand) words outside of official publications came from Okrand's visits to the annual convention (qep'a')
of the Klingon Language Institute, at which he would often reveal new words,
either off the cuff or in response to requests, or as prizes in various
contests. These words were published in the KLI's scholarly journal, HolQeD.
It can be difficult for the average student of Klingon to find some of these
more obscure sources. The KLI maintains a New Words list, which collected
these new words for a while, but it doesn't seem to have been updated in
some time. The Kliflash word database contains all the canon words known
as of November, 2002. The list below collects every new word, and
additions or corrections to existing words, released since then, through
December, 2005 (there may be some overlap between this list and the KLI's
New Words list). If we get any new words at the next qep'a', I will add
them to this list.
Together, the Kliflash word database and the list on this page constitute
(as far as I know) every canon Klingon word devised by Marc Okrand.
