Kliflash For Windows Kliflash For Windows (K4W) is the latest version of my Klingon vocabulary program. It is designed for Windows 95, 98 or XP. The last DOS version of Kliflash was version 5.x (5.0 and 5.1 are almost identical; 5.1 fixed a small bug in the Lookup function). While the wordlist files are still compatible with Kliflash v.5, that application is no longer being supported. K4W ver. 2 is also compatible with K4W versions 1.0 and 1.1. If you are currently running any of these versions, you can upgrade to K4W and retain all your scores, lists and notes from the old version. (NOTE: If you are running a version of DOS Kliflash older than v.5, you will need to upgrade to v. 5.1 first. If you just want to use the new word list with DOS Kliflash, you can do that, too. In either case, see my page where you originally downloaded this program for instructions.) To begin the installation of K4W, I will assume that you have Unzipped the distribution ZIP file into a temporary folder (Be sure to answer "Yes" to any "Replace file...?" questions). If you are updating K4W versions 1.0 or 1.1, you must first navigate to the Add/Remove Programs Window from the Control Panel, and uninstall your existing K4W version. Answer "OK" to any messages about files no longer existing. Once this is completed, do NOT delete the Kliflash For Windows folder or any files remaining in it. Then, from the Start Menu, select "Run...", browse to the folder you unzipped the files to, and run "Setup.exe". Be sure that Setup installs the application in the same folder that held your old K4W installation (usually C:\Program Files\Kliflash for Windows). To upgrade from DOS v.5.x: You should instruct the Install Wizard to install the files in this distribution pack into the same folder that DOS Kliflash currently resides in. You do not need to uninstall the program or delete any files first. If it asks if you want to replace an older file, answer "Yes". If you have already run the Wizard and put the files in a different folder, you can just copy the entire contents of that folder into the Kliflash one. To install for the first time: Simply run the Install Wizard, and accept the default folder, if you so desire, or choose a different one. Once the Install Wizard is finished, you need to run the program to finish the install procedure. If the Wizard has set up a short-cut icon for you, just click on that. Otherwise, find the folder into which you installed the files, and click on the file Klif4win.exe. The first time you run it after installation, the application will either upgrade your existing Kliflash files or create the necessary files for the first time. This should not take long, and you will only need to do it once. (NOTE: While Kliflash v.5 can be migrated to K4W, the reverse is not true. You can't install K4W in a folder and still run Kliflash v.5, too. For this reason, the install procedure will disable your copy of kliflash.exe. From this point on, you will need to run Klif4win.exe, instead.) There are still a couple of housekeeping tasks you may need to complete before you can run K4W. The application was designed for a screen resolution of 96 DPI (sometimes called "small fonts"). This is the usual default, so your system may already be set to this. If it is not, you will see a warning that the application may not look quite right. It still looks good at a variety of screen DPIs: 120 DPI (125% of 96 DPI) and 144 DPI (150%) are fine, and you probably won't need to make any changes. But if the Main Screen is out of alignment (especially if it is out of alignment enough to make it unusable), you will need to manually change the DPI, preferably to 96. From the Start Menu, go to Settings, then Control Panel, then Display. Open Display and tab on Settings. The Font Selection list may be on this tab, or you may need to click on the Advanced button first. In any case, you should set the display font to "Small fonts". Below you should see the message "Normal size (96 DPI)". Click "OK" till you have exited the window and restarted your computer. The application also requires the Klif32 font. Since I put this together myself, it will probably not be on your computer yet. The application should install the font itself and you'll never know about it, but if at any time, you get a message on starting K4W that reports an error installing the font, you can do it yourself. From Start>Settings>Control Panel, select Fonts. From the File menu, select "Install new font...". Find the folder into which you installed K4W. You should see a file named "klif32.ttf". Click on this to select it, and then install it. That should complete everything you need to do to upgrade your Kliflash application or install a copy for the first time. The next time you run the application, it will take you directly to the Main Screen. The distribution package also includes the application KliMaint, a Kliflash database maintenance program. The installer will load this, along with its on-line manual pages, into your Kliflash folder. To access it, you will need to navigate to that folder, and click on "KliMaint.exe". You can also place a shortcut on the desktop or Start menu. If you are using the DOS v. 5, you should not try to run KliMaint; the applications are too different. You might be able to do some wordlist editing, but it will make other aspects of the application too unstable.
