Kliflash For Windows (ver 2)
Kliflash is a computer-based Klingon vocabulary drill application. It
contains the entire Klingon word list (as of December, 2002), and uses proven
teaching techniques to help make learning easier. Kliflash has been tested
and used for several years by members of the Klingon language community,
and has been fine-tuned and enriched by their suggestions.
Kliflash For Windows is the latest version
of the application, and follows the DOS-based Kliflash version 5.x. It can be used
on any computer running Windows 95/98/2000/XP; a color printer is
recommended but not required.
The distribution kit for version 2 also includes a new
application, called Klimaint, with which users can self-maintain the Kliflash
word database and add new words disclosed since the last update of the
distributed database (since November, 2002). The
Newest Words page contains
these words.
If you want to use my personal update to the Kliflash database, you can download
this file,
and simply replace the corresponding files in the Kliflash directory after you have
completed the installation of K4W ver. 2. (Note that this kit was created with the Klimaint
application, and will replace all your scores and notes, and commit you to self-maintaining
the Kliflash database in the future.)

Installation Instructions
| New Users |
Persons new to Kliflash can simply download this distribution kit. Unzip it in a temporary folder, and run
Setup.exe
in that folder. If you have any version of Kliflash on your computer but have never used it or
have no interest in keeping your old progress scores, lists or notes, you can also use this kit. Have the Install
Wizard install Kliflash For Windows in a folder different from that holding your old Kliflash files, or delete
the contents of the old folder before you run Setup.
New DOS Kliflash users, see below |
k4w020 [3.6M] |
| Users of Kliflash For Windows v. 1.x |
| Use the same distribution kit if you have already installed Windows version 1.0 or 1.1 of Kliflash,
but this time you must uninstall your copy of Kliflash For Windows ver. 1.x before installing
ver. 2.0. Click "OK" if the uninstaller tells you a file doesn't exist, and don't delete the folder
or any files remaining in it. Then run Setup.exe and install into the same folder you used for
ver. 1.x. Once installation is complete, run Kliflash For Windows to complete the upgrade to ver. 2.0 |
k4w020 [3.6M] |
| Users of DOS Kliflash v. 5.x |
Use this distribution kit to upgrade from the DOS-based Kliflash ver. 5.1 or 5.0 to Kliflash For Windows. Unzip
it into a temporary folder, and be sure to direct the Install Wizard to install the new application in the
same folder that holds your old version of Kliflash.
You can also use this kit to upgrade from DOS ver. 5.2 (see below) to Kliflash For Windows |
k4w020 [3.6M] |
If you would like the new words of this version but would like to keep using the DOS-based
Kliflash, you can use this distribution kit. It will update and merge the word and list databases (upgrading
your copy of Kliflash to ver. 5.2), but will not provide any new functionality to the application. Be
sure to unzip and install the kit in the same folder that holds your old Kliflash.
You will not be able to use the database manager Klimaint with the DOS version of Kliflash

| There was a small bug in the DOS-based Kliflash ver. 5.0 that affected the Word Lookup routine. You
can upgrade directly from 5.0 to Kliflash For Windows by using the kit above, but if you want to keep the DOS-based
version, you can correct the 5.0 bug with this kit. |

| Users of any other Kliflash version |
| If you are using any other DOS-based Kliflash, and you want to retain your scores, lists or notes,
you must upgrade to DOS version 5.1 first, using this kit, and then upgrade to Kliflash For Windows using
the distribution kit above. |

| People who want to run a new installation of DOS Kliflash |
You can also use the DOS kits listed above to do a first-time installation of DOS Kliflash.
Kliflash ver. 5 will run in a DOS window on any Windows
machine. For other platforms, you might be able to find a DOS emulator to run it,
such as
FreeDOS or
DOSBox.
For a first-time installation of DOS Kliflash, first download, install and run
klifv5, then do the same (in the same directory!) with
klif52. Be sure you run the first installation before
installing the second. DISCLAIMER: I have no experience at all running Kliflash on
a non-Windows platform, so you are on your own. Good luck!
